A Florida homeowner was charged Friday with murder after authorities say he fatally shot a pet cat and then set his home on fire, killing it.
Police say Kevin M. Mathers, 60, of Naples, Fla., walked into his home in the town of Delray Beach and shot the cat, an 11-month-old pit bull named Blue, in front of his wife.
The animal died from the fire, but Mather was charged with first-degree murder and animal cruelty, police said.
Mathers has a long criminal history in the state.
He was charged in 1991 with animal cruelty and was sentenced to five years in prison.
He served nine months in prison for another dog killing.
Matschman said the animal owner has filed a lawsuit against Mather for violating the animal’s owner’s civil rights.
The woman was not identified in court documents.
