Breitbart News is reporting that Daisy Farm Crafts, an award-winning daisy farming business in Virginia, is considering closing.
The business, which has been in operation for more than 40 years, announced this week that it would cease operations as a result of the state’s decision to allow marijuana for recreational use.
The decision is set to be announced on Thursday.
Daisy Farm’s founder, Mark S. Kornel, told Breitbart News that he was “deeply saddened” by the decision.
“This is not something we’ve ever intended to do.
We are proud to serve the people of Virginia, and the people we serve in this business,” he said.
“We are deeply saddened by the fact that the Governor of Virginia has decided to legalize marijuana for adults and that the decision will not be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
This is the latest in a long line of decisions that we’ve been making that have impacted our business.”
The business is currently operating under a lease with the state and will not receive a tax break from the state.
KORNEL also pointed out that the company has already lost customers because of the decision to close.
“The state of Virginia is taking a step that is a step in the wrong direction and will have a devastating effect on Daisy Farm,” he told Breitbart.
“It will take our business to its end, as our customers will be forced to either sell or give up their business.”
In addition to losing customers, the company is also facing an additional $10 million in potential legal expenses.
In response to the news, Daisy Farm has also reached out to other local businesses that are considering closing, asking them to share their plans with the media.
“I am extremely concerned for our business, and I am going to try and find a way to protect the livelihood of our employees, customers, and employees of the business in general,” Kornell said in a statement to Breitbart News.
“Unfortunately, we have no idea how to do this, and we are also losing out on the tax benefits that many of the businesses we have worked with for many years are now losing out as well.”
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Agriculture, which regulates marijuana for state-regulated sales, said that the department is reviewing the state decision.
They added that the state is “not making any public announcements about its next steps.”
Breitbart News reached out for comment to the Virginia Attorney General’s Office.
